Carpal Tunnel Release

What is Carpal Tunnel Release?

A carpal tunnel release is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat carpal tunnel syndrome that does not respond to conservative treatments. The goal of the procedure is to open the area around the carpal tunnel so that the nerve can pass freely through the tunnel into the wrist and stop the painful symptoms in the wrist, hands, and fingers that are often associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.

How is Carpal Tunnel Release Performed at The Spine Institute of Louisiana?

At The Spine Institute of Louisiana, carpal tunnel release is performed as an outpatient procedure and may only require local anesthesia. In most cases, this procedure will only take 15-20 minutes to perform. It can be performed endoscopically.

During the procedure:

  • 1-2 small incisions are made near the transverse ligament
  • Small muscles and tissue are gently moved to the side
  • The transverse carpal ligament is opened
  • The incision is closed and sterilely dressed
