What is X-Stop Interspinous Process Decompression?

An X-Stop Interspinous Process Decompression is a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to alleviate painful symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis by decompressing the spine. Because bending backward is often a painful position if you have spinal stenosis, a small device is placed into the back of the spine and prevents the spine from bending too far backward. However, this procedure still maintains the ability of movements like bending forward (flexion) and rotating the lower back.

How is X-Stop Interspinous Process Decompression at The Spine Institute of Louisiana?

At The Spine Institute of Louisiana, an X-Stop procedure may be performed as either an inpatient or outpatient procedure based on your unique condition.

During the procedure:

  • A small incision is made in the area where stenosis is present and muscles and other structures of the spine are gently moved aside
  • Small surgical instruments and a microscope are inserted so that the bony protrusions at the back of the spine (interspinous process) can be identified and made larger
  • Once the area around the spine has been made larger, the X-Stop implant is placed at the back of the spine so that the spine can remain decompressed and painful motions are prevented.
